Radar is the primary sensor for automatic detection of objects at sea. It is fitted to all commercially operated ships, and a great many leisure vessels as well. Its detection capabilities make it invaluable for uses other than navigation and collision avoidance. Aptomar supplies advanced radar processors that are optimized to use radar’s detection capabilities for specific detecting purposes like

All Radar Processors are supplied to be installed in conjunction with a standard X-band navigational radar. Radar Processors can be installed to work with either the ship’s main X-band navigation radar, or a specific radar can be installed solely for the purpose of the radar processor. Radar processors can be specified for new builds, or can easily be retrofitted to existing vessels.

OIL SPILL DETECTION

Oil Spill Detection Radar [OSD Radar] Processors will detect a potential oil spill automatically. Oil Spill is detected as a lack of back scatter (sea clutter) and functions independently of light.

The radar processor combines data from a number of consecutive radar sweeps to show an image of the oil slick. The OSD Radar processor will calculate the position and outline of an oil slick. Because data is captured over a period of time, the OSD Radar is also able to calculate the speed and direction of drift of an oil slick.

The most important function of an OSD Radar is its capability for automatic alarming, outlining and drift measuring of oil slicks as soon as they appear. OSD Radar processors can use radar signals from the ship’s X-band navigation radar, alternatively a dedicated radar can be installed solely for oil spill detection.

ICE DETECTION

With the increased activity of shipping and oil & gas operations in arctic waters there is an increased risk to vessels and installations from ice.

All vessels operating in ice infested waters operate at a higher risk of hull damage following a collision with multi-year or glacial ice. Operating costs of vessels operating in ice infested waters are increased as fuel consumption is higher for vessels transiting heavy ice conditions.

Ice Detection Radar processors from Aptomar give the best possible view of the surrounding ice, supporting the operation in terms of ice defence, ice breaking and port access. By using data from the available navigation radar, or specially installed radar for the purpose of ice detection, Ice Detection Radar processors are able to give detailed view of ice floes, showing the path through them of less thick ice, as well as being able to display hard to detect small pieces of ice that can cause damage to a vessel or installation.

SMALL TARGET DETECTION

Conventional Navigation Radar is optimized to detect large objects such as shore lines and other vessels. The powerful Navigation Radar of a modern vessel is often unable to display small or fast moving targets.

With the increased risk of piracy in many parts of the world, as well as an increased importance of protecting national interests within a nations’ Exclusive Economic Zone, there is a need for vessels to detect not just large ships and shorelines.

Small Target Detection Radar processors from Aptomar are able to provide a detailed view of small and fast moving targets not normally shown on conventional Navigation radar. By taking data from multiple sweeps of the radar antenna, and combining the data into a single image, Small Target Detection Radar processors provide a constantly updated image with small and fast targets clearly displayed.
